Leon Löwentraut
April 25 - June 15, 2024
Curated by Denise Wendel-Poray
One of Germany’s most acclaimed young artists, Leon Löwentraut, is known for his opulent paintings of a fantastical world, full of rich color and jewel-like surfaces. Born in Kaiserslautern in 1998, he is mainly self-taught, gaining knowledge through a keen exploration and contemplation of great masters. Thus, without academic background or influence from his peers, Löwentraut’s instinctive knowledge of drawing and sense of color combinations are nothing short of astounding. Currently living and working mainly in the westernmost point of Portugal, he remains a strongly driven, adamantly independent artist. Manifestly, the supernatural world has a strong allure for him, hence, the richly textured canvases, which bring to mind the ethereal realm of symbolist painters such as Gustave Moreau and Odilon Redon.
