Rebecca Brodskis - Dilemma: Off site

La galerie By Lara Sedbon, en collaboration avec Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, invite Rebecca Brodskis à investir les trois étages du Bastille Design Center aucœur d’une exposition inédite brassant des modes d’expression variés. Véritable carte blanche au sens large, ce projet d’exposition dépasse les limites picturales. En effet, Rebecca travaille depuis plus d’un an à composer des toilesen regard de la pratique chorégraphique de la danseuse Lilach Pnina Livne. Ensemble, elles ont créé, pour le lieu, une exposition sur le corps et sur la notion d’amour inconditionnel. L’idée d’une collaboration nait il y a une dizaine d’années lors d’une performance de Lilach. Profondément émue par cette expérience, Rebecca décide, quelques années plus tard, de réaliser le portrait de Lilach et rêve de poursuivre le dialogue. Au fil de leurs échanges, de la création des toiles et de la chorégraphie dédiée, Rebecca décide d’agréger d’autres personnalités qui l’inspirent afin de développer un projet inclusif où plusieurs pratiques se mêleraient autour d’une thématiquecommune. La deuxième personne invitée par Rebecca Brodskis est le designer Alphonse Maitre pierre, qui, tout comme elle, façonne les corps pour mieux les encenser. Dans cette exposition, il habille les performeurs en s’inspirant des toiles de Rebecca. Enfin, curieuse de la génération des Millenials, très différente de la sienne malgré leur proximité en âge, Rebecca Brodskis invite Nina Cornée, Anna Gianforcaro et Lulma Guit à évoquer leur perception des relations à travers une performance en résonance avec ses peintures. Dilemma s’affirme comme une exposition au-delà des frontières, brassant les influences d’une peintre qui enrichit son regard de plasticienne de la cohésion d’expressions aussi variées qu’engagées. Le titre qui se réfère au concept de choix se dresse comme un fil rouge de l’exposition. Chacun est invité à se déplacer à travers les espaces afin d’appréhender les carrefours, les rencontres, les croisements, les interstices spatio-temporels au gré desquels un chemin, une voie se dessine sans s’imposer.

Le corps mène-t-il à l’appréhension de la liberté ?

Épuisé par la réalité existante et son cycle sans fin de désespoir, un groupe de femmes cherche de nouvelles voies d’être au monde, des voies qui placent la compassion et l’intimité au-dessus de tout. Confrontées au dilemme dépressif d’essayer de former un nouveau monde dans un monde déjà existant, ces femmes cherchent à élargir les images qu’elles ont d’elles-mêmes - en voyageant du banal, du sexuel, du corporel, du regard... en transcendant vers la réflexion, l’intime, l’abstrait... et en plongeant dans une renaissance de ce qu’elles peuvent et s’efforcent d’être - bien au-delà de la logique et des habitudes de ce monde bidimensionnel et violent...Répartie sur les trois étages du Bastille Design Center, cette œuvre performativedure environ 3 heures et est divisée en trois couches qui se déroulentsimultanément. À l’étage intermédiaire, un groupe de 6 femmes diverses pratique la compassion en utilisant leur existence corporelle - par le toucher, un regard dans les yeux, le verrouillage des doigts, une position réconfortante, ensemble. À l’étage supérieur se trouvent trois femmes à différents stades de leur vie, chacune assise dans sa propre chambre, ouverte à une véritable conversation avec les membres du public sur ce qui les effraie le plus. À l’étage inférieur, une femme seule, une mère, l’artiste de cette œuvre, est nue et existe avec son petit garçon dans l’espace de la galerie - une intimité crue exposée en public. Les dix performeuses de Dilemma : Unconditionally sont toujours entourés par les figures réconfortantes et puissantes des peintures de Rebecca Brodskis - formant ensemble un nouveau paysage intime de femmes, par des femmes.

The gallery By Lara Sedbon, in collaboration with Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, invites Rebecca Brodskis to take over the three floors of the Bastille Design Center for a new exhibition mixing various modes of expression. Veritable carte blanche in the broad sense, this exhibition project goes beyond pictorial limits. Indeed, Rebecca has been working for more than a year to compose pieces from the choreographic practice of the dancer Lilach Pnina Livne. Together, they have created an exhibition for the venue on the body and on the notion of unconditional love. The idea of a collaboration came about ten years ago during a performance by Lilach. Deeply moved by this experience, Rebecca decides, a few years later, to make the portrait of Lilach and dreams of continuing the dialogue. Throughout their exchanges, the creation of the canvases and the dedicated choreography, Rebecca decides to bring together other personalities who inspire her in order to develop an inclusive project where several practices would mingle around a common theme. The second person invited by Rebecca Brodskis is the designer Alphonse Maitre pierre, who, just like her, shapes bodies to better praise them. In this exhibition, he dresses the performers inspired by Rebecca’s paintings. Finally, curious about the Millenials generation, very different from hers despite their proximity in age, Rebecca Brodskis invites Nina Cornée, Anna Gianforcaro and Lulma Guit to discuss their perception of relationships through a performance in resonance with her paintings. Dilemma asserts itself as an exhibition beyond borders, blending the influences of a painter who enriches her visual vision with the cohesion of expressions as varied as they are committed. The title which refers to the concept of choice stands as a common thread of the exhibition.

Everyone is invited to move through spaces in order to apprehend the crossroads, encounters, crossings, spatio-temporal interstices through which a path, a way, emerges without imposing itself.

Does the body lead to apprehension of freedom?

Exhausted by the existing reality and its endless cycle of despair, a group of women seek new ways of being in the world, ways that place compassion and intimacy above all. Faced with the depressive dilemma of trying to form a new world in an already existing one, these women seek to expand the images they have of themselves - by traveling banal, sexual, corporeal, gaze... by transcending towards reflection, the intimate, the abstract... and plunging into a rebirth of what they can and strive to be - far beyond the logic and habits of this two-dimensional and violent world... Spread over the three floors of the Bastille Design Center, this performance work lasts about 3 hours and is divided into three layers that unfold simultaneously. On the middle floor, a group of 6 diverse women practice compassion using their bodily existence - through touch, eye gaze, finger lock, comforting position, together. On the upper floor are three women at different stages of their lives, each sitting in her own room, open to a real conversation with members of the public about what scares them the most. On the lower floor, a single woman, a mother, the artist of this work, is naked and exists with her little boy in the space of the gallery - an intimacy believed exposed in public. The ten performers of Dilemma: Unconditionally are always surrounded by the comforting and powerful figures of Rebecca Brodskis' paintings - together forming a new intimate landscape of women, by women.
