En écho à l’exposition que le MO.CO. consacre à l’histoire de l'École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier (MO.CO. Esba), le MO.CO. Panacée propose une réflexion autour d’un « cas d’école » : l’atelier de Djamel Tatah aux Beaux-Arts de Paris. Professeur pendant quinze années au sein de cette institution, Djamel Tatah a formé une génération d’artistes dont la diversité des pratiques, la singularité des trajectoires et la rapide émergence sur la scène nationale intriguent.
À la différence de la plupart des écoles d’art territoriales, dont celle de Montpellier, les Beaux-Arts de Paris reposent sur un système « d’ateliers ». Chacun est dirigé de manière autonome par un artiste reconnu, français ou étranger. Hérité du XIXe siècle, ce dispositif a profondément évolué depuis : il ne s’agit plus de reproduire un style, mais, à travers un dialogue quotidien avec une figure tutélaire, de trouver sa propre voix. Ce compagnonnage encourage l’autonomie et favorise l’émergence d’un langage singulier tout en inscrivant chaque étudiant dans une communauté de pairs.
Professeur à Paris de 2008 à 2023, le peintre Djamel Tatah, aujourd’hui installé à Montpellier, a ainsi formé de nombreux étudiants, dont une quinzaine d’artistes qui se distinguent aujourd’hui par la force de leur œuvre et l’essor de leur carrière : Kenia Almaraz Murillo, Raphaëlle Benzimra, Djabril Boukhenaïssi, Tristan Chevillard, Fabien Conti, Mathilde Denize, Léo Dorfner, Clémence Gbonon, Bilal Hamdad, Nina Jayasuriya, Dora Jeridi, David Mbuyi, Zélie Nguyen, Pierre Pauze, Blaise Schwartz et Rayan Yasmineh.
Djamel Tatah revendique une pédagogie fondée sur les notions de transmission et d’autodidaxie qui semblent, au premier abord, contradictoires. Que peut-on transmettre, en effet, si ce n’est un savoir ? La pédagogie de la confiance, plus que de la répétition, ouvre un espace de liberté dans lequel chacun peut affirmer sa propre subjectivité et inventer ses formes.
L’exposition présentée au MO.CO. Panacée réunit plus de 120 œuvres, récentes ou spécialement conçues pour l’occasion. À travers la peinture – oscillant entre figuration et abstraction – mais aussi le dessin, la sculpture, le tissage ou l’installation, les artistes ouvrent des mondes intérieurs, réels ou fictionnels, à la frontière du présent et de l’imaginaire collectif. Leurs représentations, d’une grande diversité formelle, s’inspirent aussi bien des maîtres anciens que des pratiques vernaculaires, des miniatures persanes, des héritages diasporiques, de la musique contemporaine, de la culture pop et post-internet. Jouant souvent du fragment, ils explorent les interstices, les marges et leurs possibles.

Echoing the exhibition that the MO.CO. devotes to the history of the Higher School of Fine Arts of Montpellier (MO.CO. Esba), the MO.CO. Panacée offers a reflection on a "case study": the workshop of Djamel Tatah at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. Professor for fifteen years within this institution, Djamel Tatah has formed a generation of artists whose diversity of practices, singularity of trajectories and rapid emergence on the national scene are intriguing.
Unlike most territorial art schools, including that of Montpellier, the Beaux-Arts de Paris are based on a system of "workshops". Each is independently directed by a recognized artist, French or foreign. Inherited from the 19th century, this system has profoundly evolved since then: it is no longer a question of reproducing a style, but, through a daily dialogue with a tutelary figure, of finding one’s own voice. This compagnonnage encourages autonomy and promotes the emergence of a singular language while enrolling each student in a community of peers.

Djamel Tatah advocates a pedagogy based on the notions of transmission and autodidacticism which seem, at first glance, contradictory. What can be transmitted, indeed, if not knowledge? The pedagogy of trust, more than repetition, opens a space of freedom in which everyone can assert their own subjectivity and invent their forms.
The exhibition presented at the MO.CO. Panacée brings together more than 120 works, recent or specially designed for the occasion. Through painting – oscillating between figuration and abstraction – but also drawing, sculpture, weaving or installation, artists open interior worlds, real or fictional, at the border of the present and the collective imagination. Their representations, of great formal diversity, are inspired as well by ancient masters as vernacular practices, Persian miniatures, diasporic heritages, contemporary music, pop culture and post-internet. Often playing the fragment, they explore the interstices, the margins and their possibilities.
