Né en 1981, Fabien Mérelle vit et travaille à Tours. Diplômé de l’École des Beaux-Arts de Paris en 2006, il est, en 2010, le premier lauréat du prix Canson. Il entre dans les collections du Centre Pompidou suite à la donation Guerlain en 2012.
Fabien Mérelle projette son corps dans un univers où tout se mêle - animal, végétal et minéral -, où l’écorce vient rogner la peau, où l’homme est semblable aux bêtes. Un monde où il n’y a plus ni loi de gravité, ni bienséance, ni tabou. De ces décors émergent des scènes détaillées, la feuille ou la matière comme réceptacle des pensées, des envies, des angoisses de l’auteur. Sculptant l’improbable à la façon réaliste, il dévoile l’envers du décor, une autre réalité où s’entremêlent mythes grecs et croyances ancestrales.

Born in 1981, Fabien Mérelle lives and works in Tours. A 2006 graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he was the first recipient of the Canson Prize in 2010. His work entered the Centre Pompidou collections following the Guerlain donation in 2012.
Fabien Mérelle projects his body into a universe where everything blends together—animal, vegetable, and mineral—where bark encroaches on skin, where man is similar to beasts. A world where there are no longer any laws of gravity, propriety, or taboos. From these settings emerge detailed scenes, with leaves or other materials serving as receptacles for the artist's thoughts, desires, and anxieties. Sculpting the improbable in a realistic manner, he reveals what lies behind the scenes, another reality where Greek myths and ancestral beliefs intertwine.
